A subsurface irrigation system is an irrigation system that comprises of a network of pipes or soaker hoses that is installed just below the surface of the ground. The purpose of this method of irrigation is so that water is supplied directly to the root zone of plants and grass. These soaker hoses emit water at a slow, even rate in small amounts.
There are a number of subsurface irrigation systems on the market that require various methods of installation, some more labour intensive than others.
ecotube is our eco-friendly subsurface irrigation system that is user-friendly, low-maintenance and easy to install.
Steps for Installing a Subsurface Irrigation System
Below is a 6-Step instruction on how to install an ecotube subsurface irrigation system into your lawn or plant beds.
Step 1: Plan Your Subsurface Irrigation System Installation
Prepare an installation plan outlining where you would like to install the ecotube. Be sure to calculate the spacing between each pipeline and your water connection.
Step 2: Prepare the Area for Installation
Dig trenches along the grass or alongside the plants where you plan on installing the ecotube. Remember to keep the same depth along the entire length of the trench.
Step 3: Lay your Irrigation System in the Ground
Lay the ecotube into the trenches you’ve just dug. Cut off any excess pipe with a sharp scissor at the appropriate length – leaving enough of the pipe exposed.
Place a stopper into the end of the pipe that will not be connected to your water source. Connect the pressure reducer, along with the necessary fittings to the exposed pipe.
Step 4: Connect all Fittings
Connect your garden hose from the tap to the pressure reducer using the fittings provided.
Step 5: Test the Subsurface Irrigation System
Once you have completed connect all the fittings, test that your subsurface irrigation system is operating correctly. Open the tap to check that the water spreads equally.
Step 6: Close the Trenches
After successfully testing your irrigation system, close the trenches using the soil you’ve dug out. Alternatively, if you’ve dug out grass, replace the grass over the trenches.
